What is knockdown stitch in embroidery?

A light, open layer of stitches sewn first on towels, fleece and other pile fabrics to flatten the pile, so the design on top sits on a smooth base.

Knockdown stitch, explained

Knockdown is often a sparse fill or grid in a thread close to the fabric color, sewn a little larger than the design so its edges blend in. It does a similar job to a water-soluble topping, and on deep pile many embroiderers use both. Embrizo doesn't add a separate knockdown layer; its fleece preset uses heavy underlay instead, and the towel guide covers topping and backing.
