What is stitch length in embroidery?

The distance between two needle penetrations; each stitch type has a useful range, and formats set a maximum for a single move.

Stitch length, explained

Running stitches are typically about 2–3 mm, fill stitches around 3–4 mm, and a satin stitch is as long as its column is wide. Very short stitches can pile up and break thread, while long ones snag. Embrizo defaults to 2 mm running stitches and about 3.5 mm fill stitches, and splits moves longer than the format allows, such as 12.1 mm for DST.
