What are the standard embroidery hoop sizes?
The common home sizes are 4x4 in (100 × 100 mm), 5x7 in (130 × 180 mm), 6x10 in (160 × 260 mm), 8x8 in (200 × 200 mm) and 8x12 in (200 × 300 mm). Larger machines go to 9.5x14 in (240 × 360 mm) and beyond.
Is the hoop size the design size?
No. The hoop size is its sewing field; keep designs about 3 mm inside each edge, so a 4x4 hoop fits designs up to about 94 × 94 mm.
Which hoop size should I buy first?
A 5x7 covers most projects: left chest logos, names, towels and many free designs. Add a 4x4 for small items and a 6x10 or larger for bags and jacket backs if your machine supports them.
Do all brands use the same hoop sizes?
The names are similar, but exact fields vary by a few millimeters between brands and models. Your machine's manual lists the exact sewing field of each hoop it accepts.
