What is contour fill in embroidery?

A fill whose rows follow the outline of a shape, curving with it like ripples, instead of running in straight parallel rows as tatami does.

Contour fill, explained

Contour fill suits shapes where curved rows add movement, such as petals, leaves, waves and swirls, and it catches the light differently from a flat tatami. Depending on the shape, rows can crowd where it narrows and spread where it widens, so a test sew-out is worth it. Embrizo fills large areas with tatami at an angle it picks for each shape rather than with contour fill; contour fills are usually set up by hand in desktop digitizing software.
