What is zigzag underlay in embroidery?

Underlay sewn as an open zigzag inside a satin column, lifting the satin and covering more of the fabric beneath it.

Zigzag underlay, explained

Zigzag underlay is used under wide satin columns, often on top of edge runs, so the satin stands up instead of sinking into the fabric. It is kept inside the column edges so it never shows. Embrizo adds a zigzag to wide satin columns, over edge runs at the standard and heavy levels, and the heavy level uses it on narrower columns too.
