What is jump stitch in embroidery?

A move of the hoop to a new spot without the needle sewing, which leaves a loose thread across the surface unless it is trimmed.

Jump stitch, explained

Long moves are split into several jumps to stay within the format's limit, such as 12.1 mm for DST. Many machines trim jumps automatically above a length you set, and short ones are often left and snipped by hand. A good sewing order keeps jumps short and few, often by travelling under areas that will be covered later.

Jump stitch, drawn as thread. Real stitches are around 0.4 mm apart.
