What is fill stitch in embroidery?

Rows of stitches that cover the larger areas of a design; tatami is the most common kind.

Fill stitch, explained

Fills take over where satin would be too wide, and they usually make up most of a design's stitch count. Besides tatami, many programs offer patterned or motif fills for texture. Embrizo uses tatami fill for shapes wider than about 6.5 mm, sewing fills first and satin details over them. The satin vs fill guide compares the two.
