Three questions that decide it
Do you want to draw the stitches, or have them made for you?
Hand digitizing (Embrilliance StitchArtist, Hatch Digitizer, Ink/Stitch) gives you control over every object. Auto-digitizing (Embrizo, Hatch Composer, Chroma, PE-DESIGN's wizards) turns an image into stitches for you.
Which computers do you use?
Hatch, EmbroideryStudio and PE-DESIGN need Windows. Embrilliance and Chroma also run on a Mac. Embrizo runs in any browser, including Chromebooks and shared computers.
How many designs, and how do you want to pay?
One-time licenses cost more up front and nothing after. Plans spread the cost: Embrizo starts at $96 a year for 20 designs a month, with unlimited designs on Pro.

Our take: if most of your designs start as a logo, a drawing or other flat artwork, an auto-digitizer is the fastest way to a file, and one that runs in the browser works on whatever computer you have. If you'd rather have someone else do it, see digitizing services vs Embrizo.

The quickest way to see what it does with your artwork is to try it. With a free account, digitizing and previewing cost nothing and take about a minute.
What's the best embroidery digitizing software for beginners?
If you want to turn images into files without learning digitizing, an auto-digitizer is the easiest start: Embrizo runs in the browser and makes a file from an upload in seconds. If you want to learn to digitize by hand, Embrilliance StitchArtist and Hatch are popular with home embroiderers.
Is there free embroidery digitizing software?
Ink/Stitch is free and open source, as an extension to the Inkscape vector editor; you set up the stitches on vector paths yourself. With a free Embrizo account you can auto-digitize, preview and save designs and download the free designs; a plan is needed to download files from your own images.
Which digitizing software works on a Mac?
Embrilliance and Chroma run on Mac and Windows, Ink/Stitch runs on macOS through Inkscape, and Embrizo runs in any browser on a Mac. Hatch, Wilcom EmbroideryStudio and PE-DESIGN are Windows programs.
Do I need auto-digitizing?
If most of your work is logos, lettering, clip art and drawings, auto-digitizing saves hours per design. Hand digitizing is worth learning for complex art, very small lettering on caps or special techniques, where you want to place every stitch object yourself.
Where do the prices come from?
From each vendor's own website, checked in October 2026. Prices and features change often, so check the vendor before buying.
