What is edge-run underlay in embroidery?

A line of running stitches sewn just inside the edges of a shape before the top stitching, to anchor the fabric and give a crisp edge.

Edge-run underlay, explained

Edge runs hold the outline of a satin column or fill in place, so the top stitches don't pull the fabric in at the edges, and they give satin a slightly raised border. They are the usual underlay for medium satin columns and a common first pass under fills. Embrizo adds edge runs to medium and wide satin columns and walks just inside the edge of larger fills; the heavy underlay level adds them to narrower columns too.
