What is knockout in embroidery?

An area left unstitched inside a design so the fabric shows through as part of the artwork, such as lettering cut out of a filled badge.

Designs and digitizing

Knockout, explained

Knockouts save stitches and let the garment color act as one more color, but thin ones tend to close up as the fill around them pulls in, so many digitizers keep them a few millimeters wide or edge them with satin. The word is also used for cutting a lower fill out from under a shape sewn on top, so stitches don't stack. Embrizo leaves letter counters and gaps in your artwork's background color unstitched, and sews lettering and lines narrower than about 2.5 mm on top of the fill below rather than cutting them out.
