What is color change in embroidery?

A command in an embroidery file that marks where one thread ends and the next begins, so the machine stops for rethreading or switches needles.

Color change, explained

On a single-needle machine every color change is a manual rethread, so each extra color adds real time; a multi-needle machine switches needles itself. Formats such as DST and EXP mark where the color changes but not which color comes next, so you follow the color sheet. Embrizo separates your artwork into threads, lets you lower the number of colors or merge them, and its design check flags designs with more than 12 colors.
