What is merrow border in embroidery?

A thick, rounded overlock edge wrapped around a cut-out patch on a special merrowing machine, giving many sew-on patches their raised rim.

Merrow border, explained

Merrowing is done after the patch is embroidered and cut out, so the stitch file has no border of its own, and it suits circles, ovals and other simple shapes because the machine can't follow sharp inside corners. The usual alternative is a satin border sewn as part of the design, which works for any shape and on home machines too. Embrizo's patch designer adds a stitched border, and the patch guide covers both edges.
