What is free-standing lace in embroidery?

Lace embroidered on water-soluble stabilizer alone, so that once the stabilizer is rinsed away only the connected threads are left.

Designs and digitizing

Free-standing lace, explained

Free-standing lace, often shortened to FSL, needs a design digitized for it, with a connected grid of underlay that ties every stitch together; an ordinary design comes apart when the stabilizer is rinsed out. Many embroiderers hoop one or two layers of fibrous wash-away drum-tight, use the same thread in the top and bobbin because both sides show, and sew slowly. Embrizo doesn't make FSL designs; the free-standing lace guide covers the technique.
