What is presser foot in embroidery?

The small foot around the needle that holds the fabric down as each stitch forms; on embroidery machines it usually hops up and down with the needle.

Presser foot, explained

The presser foot keeps the fabric from lifting with the needle, which is what causes flagging and skipped stitches. On many machines its height can be set for thick items such as towels and jackets, so it just clears the surface without dragging. On most home machines, raising the foot opens the tension discs, so raise it before threading; the threading guide walks through it.
