What is needle (size and point) in embroidery?

Embroidery needles are sized by thickness, often 75/11 for 40 wt thread, and come with ballpoints for knits or sharp points for wovens.

Needle (size and point), explained

A ballpoint needle pushes between knit fibers instead of piercing them, which avoids holes and runs in T-shirts and performance wear; a sharp point pierces wovens, cap twill and leather cleanly. Larger sizes such as 80/12 or 90/14 are often used on heavy canvas and denim, while smaller ones such as 65/9 or 70/10 pair with fine 60 wt thread for small lettering. Change needles regularly, since a dull or burred needle causes thread breaks and skipped stitches.
