What is bobbin thread in embroidery?

The finer thread wound on the bobbin, usually white or black, that forms the underside of every stitch.

Bobbin thread, explained

Bobbin thread is typically lighter than top thread, often around 60–90 wt, so it adds little bulk under the design. Match its color to the fabric, or to the top thread where the back will show, such as on towels. With balanced tension, the back of a satin column shows bobbin thread down roughly its middle third, with top thread on either side.
