About Brother PES files

PES is the format Brother's embroidery machines and PE-Design use. Baby Lock machines are built on the same platform and read PES too.

Files are written as PES version 6. That includes your thread colors and names for software, plus the PEC block with the Brother palette colors and thumbnails your machine shows on screen.

Colors are matched to the 64-color Brother thread chart, so the machine screen shows close equivalents of your design colors.

Tips

Getting a PES file onto your machine

  • Copy the .pes file to a USB stick formatted as FAT32, or use your machine's transfer app or cable.
  • Keep file names short and simple; some machines only show the first few characters.
  • Check the design size against your largest hoop before you transfer it.
  • Thread colors in the file are suggestions: match them to the threads you actually have.

How do I open a .pes file without software?

Drop the file into the viewer above. It opens right in your browser on Windows, Mac, Linux or a tablet, and shows the stitches, thread colors, size, stitch count and estimated sew time.

Will my Brother machine show the right colors?

Yes. Each design color is matched to the nearest color in the Brother thread chart, and those colors are what the machine displays. You can pick a different thread for any color before downloading.

How do I put the PES file on my machine?

Copy the .pes file to a USB stick (or transfer it with Brother's app or software), insert it into the machine and choose it from the embroidery menu.

Can I convert a PES file to another format?

Yes. After opening it, pick another format such as DST, JEF or EXP and download it. Viewing is free; downloading converted files is included in every plan.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read in your browser and never leaves your device.
